Lots of Kendama companies use silk paint for most damas and I wanted to buy a new silk kendama but I always have problems with silk paint. All the silk damas I've had(Yourd v4 mod, Smith v4 mod, caramel kaizen, burnt orange kaizen) it always does this thing when I keep jamming it, it kind of peels and becomes glossy. I bought the orange kaizen in November and now it's not even good for balance tricks. Does this always happen with silk? I want to buy a kaizen 2.0 and they have nice colors but it's just the silk that is stopping me.

Its not always like that on silk paints. I've had the same experience with kaizen. Not the best silk paint in my opinion.
I think that if your looking for a durable silk paint, check out KROM. the standard krom rubber is super durable.

the only time a silk tama has become glossy for me was on my burnt orange kaizen. other silks i've had held up actually. i get a sense it's like hit-or-miss in general unfortunately :/ i haven't jammed my 2.0 long enough to say, but so far the paint is holding up. i agree with @kendama duke. definitely try a krom rubber paint some day

I've had the opposite with Krom & Kaizen. I bought a Rosadama a couple years ago and it had some bad chipping problems soon after I bought it. My Silk padauk Kaizen has very few chips after many sessions.

image.jpg image.jpg I have a 2.0 half split. It had a bit more stick to it brand new. It came with 67.58g tama and a 75.20 ken (sarado: 37.05g sword: 38.15g). Just a hair more stick than proclear, but way less than cusion clear. Be patient and wait for a nice sale. You'll be happy. Maybe try DWI. They have a sale right now.

In my experience, a broken in pro clear is way more stick than cushion. have you had different experiences?

Do you have one? How long have you been playing with it and did it peel to be glossy?

I like the Silk paint when it's fresh but have had some reports back from our customers that it wears fast. I'm not sure if it has something to do with colors but the burnt orange in particular seems to scrape up or peel faster than the others based on their experience and my own.

The black below is about a year old but it's a lefty so I don't play it as much. The burnt orange on the right is about a month old but also hasn't been played that much. You can see there are more scrapped areas on the orange tama. The black one hasn't really ever shown that kind of marking even though it should be easier to see on black.

Perhaps it has something to do with the way the coating sticks to certain colors or maybe they just have bad paint days every once in a while.

My proclear is my oldest tama but is showing less sign of wear. It's like glass!!! Hard for balance tricks (I can only attempt lighthouses anyway), but awesome for cup flow, moshikame, and spiking. The silk can catch a lighthouse, and my cusion clear feels like a magnet when catching lighthouses.

The different colors lose stick at different times. the stickiest ive found is the kaizen black silk. it is just getting stickier and stickier. gets honed for boarders
EDIT. Its all about what batch you get. If china screws it up, the damas screwed up

I have a kaizen padauk caramel and a casper half split. the padauk was very sticky out of the box, but it did not last very long as it is glossy now. impossible for lunars and bad for lightys. my half-split is still silky but seems to have lost its stick over time. Whenever I sweat on it, it loses a little stick. has anyone else had a similar problem where it stays silk but loses tack?

Proclear develops stick over time. After a long time, it will be stickier than cusion clear by far

Definitely hit or miss. My CCS pro mod silk tama had and has kept its grip for over a year now, and my ash trip split kaizen 2.0 tama had grip the first day I got it and lost it, just now recently getting some grip on it after some cup play here and there after nearly a year.

I like silk paint and have been quite lucky I guess. I have 3 KUSA silks that are nearly a year old and are holding up well and a couple of Krom Pops that are okay(KUSA may be more durable) after a couple of months play.

We have had a KUSA Silk on the demo table for about 6 months and it's holding up pretty well. On the other hand I've seen NOS (new old stock) that was so soft out of the box you could press a fingerprint into it.

I agree with the consensus on here regarding KUSA silk paint and how it's hit or miss. Have 3 silk tamas right now (Smith v4, 2.0 70/30, 2.0 Trip Split) and only the 70/30 plays like advertised after a period of jamming.

I have heard from the KUSA team that it is all about the chinese manufacturing. If china leaves the paint out too short or too long, it wont be the right texture. I have had kusa tamas that feel like they will just stick to the ken and not come off, and others that are quite slippery.

Has anyone had issues with the turquoise kaizen paint? I just got mine, and with just a 1 turn light house the paint is chipping.( Showing white spots and turning glossy) Anyone know why?
