I don’t think that there is a thread specifically for this. But the title says it, what do you guys think about licking your bevel? Do you have to do it to lace that bird or stilt banger? Or do you think it’s cheating? Let me know what you think!

I think that a licked bevel is more helpful for birds and handlestalls than for tama grip stalls like stilt.

I personally don’t approve of licking your bevel; granted many players do it in competitions (I.e. MKO was totally cool with bevel licking) and it might be a disadvantage not to lick it, but I feel like it’s better to land a trick in a competition or in a film grind without any modifications; it makes landing said trick all the more satisfying :)

I hear you, but I consider it to be in the same category as playing in the rain or playing on a hot day and getting sweat all over the tama.

I don't really need to lick the bevel... I just do it for the taste.

Fair point; it’s kind of like I was saying that it’s cheating to do stalls on a humid day when they are easier, lol; it’s just part of the game I guess; I still feel a little bit like altering the playing field yourself is a little wrong, but I’m not gonna openly criticize or judge someone if they lick their bevel

I used to be a big bevel licker, but I stopped when all of that moisture warped the wood on my favorite kendama.

If you insist on wetting the bevel a little to help with stalls, there are more sanitary ways to do it, like using the sweat from your hands. Also, I believe the peeps at Su Lab carry around a little spray bottle filled with water to replicate the effect without having to use any bodily fluids.

If everybody starts licking the bevel than why don’t company’s just start putting sticky paint in the bevel?

Neither of those are good ideas tbh. Sticky paint on the bevel would make spike tricks unnecessarily harder. In both cases, the paint would wear down and stalls will become more difficult over time. Keeping the bevel and cups natty allows damas to break in and be stall friendly in the long run. There’s a reason barely anyone likes painted kens.

*bump* speaking of licking paint, I’ve noticed that many of the newer tama designs (namely from Sweets) now have paint inside of the bevel. Weird question but have any bevel lickers tasted said paint?
