Do you tie a knot above your tama? Why or why not?

Heck yeah I do. Leave me alone. Jk

But yeah I do, I do it to all my strings and I just find it a bit helpful when I'm doing certain tricks like taps, birds, or trades.

Nah, I don't need to because I learned all my tama grip tricks by placing my ring finger on the string hole, so it stops the bead from popping out anyway.

Same with the string hold but when the trades and pull up happen the bead pops out and it gets annoying

Hm that's weird, doesn't happen to me. I always have a finger, whether it be ring or sometimes pinky, on the string hole no matter what I'm doing cause of the bead

    Nope.
i like to omit the knot for certain tricks.
Plus, it's a lot easier to replace my string that way!

Why knot? I don't like the bead jumping out and since it does it whether it's tama grip or ken grip I was looking for a fix. Stuffing paper or foil in works but the string gets kinked after a while so when I saw this idea on the JKA site I gave it a try and have been using it on most of my kendama since.

Sweets aTack played for long enough that the knot put a circle pattern in the paint.

I'm going with a knot! It's O.G. so nobody can diss and I'll be avoiding a bead or bearing under a lunar.

    Nah.
Tbh, i've never been annoyed of the bead popping out. I mean I guess the only time i could remember having the bead pop out being troublesome was when i was learning pull up axe. but then i just adjusted my tama grip to hold the string down against the string hole.

So, popping up an airplane or lunar while touching the string in any way wouldn't be called cheating yourself? It adds a variable that makes the trick easier

how would you manipulate the string while doing an airplane or lunar that would make it easier?

i wouldn't think it'd be cheating per se. people use holding down the string hole for other things like for stunt plane (i mean there is also touching the string as if you were going to do a cold pizza but i digress since it's kinda like a string trick lol). the only time i'd think string touching is a no-no would be from using your non-playing hand to adjust the sting in the middle of lacing (like if you were in lunar or lighthouse and felt the urge to adjust the sting wrapped around the ken.

I never do, it bugs me more to feel that knot in the string the odd time than it does to have the bead pop out with certain tricks.

@goenKendama very cool that the knot has carved a circle into the paint on that aTack! Ha

I the bead dropping out on spikes doesn't bother me too much but when I'm trying to hit a stall and it leaks out and gets under the tama hole rim, argh!

@htimSxelA Yeah, that one has been played a bit. I'm breaking in a new aTack Rasta so I'll be interested to see if it lasts long enough to do it again.

No knots. I also use a ring finger to tame the string.

You can use your ring finger or any finger if you will, so manipulate some tricks to be easier. Airplane for example can be easier if you manipulate the string. It helps with the ken flipping with barely any effort.

Tried tying a knot on one of my damas, and while it does help, it sucks during times when you have to take the tama off (e.g. making mashups).

Now, I only knot my dedicated lunar damas since the bead popping out is a problem I have when attempting inward lunar lines.

Do you really change things around a lot? I don't usually tie in a know until I know I like the setup then I leave it until I need maintenance.
